The thyroid gland produces levothyroxine (T4) and L-triiodothyronine (T3). T3 is considered the active form of the hormone. About 20% of T3 is excreted
Armour contains both T4 and T3, while Levothyroxine is T4. If a patient does not need extra T3, then they do better on T4 levothyroxine only. If a patient does not convert T4 into T3 very well, then they will do better by replacing both T4 and T3 by either taking levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3), or by taking an NDT, such as Armour.
